Wrongfully Convicted Central Park Five Receive Honorary Bronx Preparatory High School Diplomas

VIBE: Central Park Five Cross The Stage With Honorary High School Diplomas

Three-fifths of the Central Park Five, or “brothers through fire,” if you let Yusef Salaam tell it, were venerated with honorary diplomas from Bronx Preparatory High School on Monday (June 26).

The five men that make up the C.P. Five are Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana Jr., and Kharey Wise. In 1989, they were found guilty of the brutal rape of a woman jogging in the park when they were all teenagers, ranging from 14-16 years old.

Calling out the fallacies of their interrogation, admitting they were coerced to make incriminating statements, the black and Latino teens all refused a plea bargain and were sentenced to seven to 13 years in prison....

AMERICAN SECURITY TODAY: Bronx Crack Dealer Gets 65 Yrs in Prison for Murdering 2 Cousins

Orane Nelson, aka ‘Amaze,’ 28, was sentenced yesterday in Manhattan federal court to a prison term of 65 years for murdering Jennifer Rivera and Jason Rivera on January 16, 2013, in connection with a dispute over a drug debt, as well as for narcotics conspiracy and firearms possession charges.

The announcement was made by Joon H. Kim, the Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

At the time of the murders, Jennifer Rivera was 20 years old, and Jason Rivera was 30.

Nelson was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Denise L. Cote, who presided over a two-week jury trial earlier this year at which NELSON was convicted on all counts in the controlling indictment......

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A woman now too scared to show her face was speaking out Wednesday night about being slashed in the knee and hand by a stranger on the subway – in part of a growing crime trend in New York City.

The victim spoke about her terrifying ordeal for the first time exclusively to CBS2’s Jessica Moore.

With the woman’s attacker on the run and still too scared to show her face, Lydia Gonzalez remembers the morning commute that turned violent in an instant.

“This one looks like she’s ready for a fight,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez was taking the No. 6 Train to work around 6 a.m. Thursday, when she said a fellow passenger went ballistic over her choice of a seat......

PINSTRIPE ALLEY: The Yankees owe the citizens of the Bronx an apology, and a check

In January of 2006, the proposal for the new Yankee Stadium nearly died. In a New York Times piece entitled “A Bronx Cheer,” they discuss the intense opposition from the community and the Bronx borough council over the $800 million proposal to build a new Yankee Stadium adjacent to the old one.

One resident, Ernesto Maldonado, said "We've never benefited from the stadium, and we don't believe we'll ever benefit from it."

Another resident, a community board member named Mary L. Blassingame, said “If they had been a good neighbor, they would not have put this plan through."

The reason for this sentiment was obvious. Firstly, the Yankees received a massive tax break......

While MTA officials mull over temporary solutions to address the ever-growing list of subway crises, another group is exploring the possibility of an outer borough commuter rail line. The Regional Plan Association teamed up with the Rockefeller Foundation to offer a $45,000 award to four teams of designers, architects, and urban planners to draft a proposal that would address community development in The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, reports DNAinfo .

MOSES IS GOING DOWN IN THE BRONX: More details emerge for plan to raze Robert Moses–era expressway

In March of this year, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the state would set aside $1.8 billion for a Bronx infrastructure project to transform the Robert Moses–era Sheridan Expressway into a pedestrian-friendly boulevard, among other improvements.

For decades, nearby residents have worried about the deleterious effects of pollution from the traffic and feared for the safety of pedestrians due to the many large trucks that travel through the residential streets en route to the Hunts Point Cooperative Market.

The 1.3-mile expressway was built in 1962, severing residents from the Bronx River and immediately causing traffic and air-quality issues, a pernicious by-product of Moses’s legacy.

Community activists have long fought for the alteration or razing of the expressway; most notably, the Southern Bronx River Watershed Alliance took up the cause in the late 1990s. News of the plan, then, comes as a long-awaited win for the community, which will have unimpeded access to waterfront.

Its implementation, however, must strike a delicate balance between residents’ health and safety and the economic vitality of the Hunts Point Market, which employs around 3,500 workers, many of whom live nearby.

Cuomo promises that this will be achievable, stating in a press release that “The project will create an interconnected South Bronx with access to the waterfront, recreation, and less traffic on local streets while simultaneously better supporting those who use the Hunts Point Market—a vital economic engine for the borough.”

The expressway project was announced almost a year after the state dedicated $15 million to the development of the Greenmarket Regional Food Hub, in Hunts Point, and will purportedly create 4,250 new jobs over its duration.

The Sheridan is set to be decommissioned next year as part of phase one, and the completion of the $700 million tree-lined boulevard is anticipated for 2019.

CITY LAND: City Planning Approves Baychester Square Mall in the Bronx; City Council Next

The City Planning Commission approved the construction of a destination shopping complex and a single building with 180 units of affordable senior housing in the Bronx.

On June 21, 2017, the City Planning Commission issued a favorable report on a joint application from the Department of Citywide Administrative Services and Gun Hill Square LLC.

The application requested the disposition of city-owned property, three special permits, a zoning map amendment to upzone the site, and a zoning text amendment to designate the project as a Mandatory Inclusionary Housing area.

The applicant proposed the construction of a new pedestrian-oriented open-air urban shopping complex and a single-residential building containing 180 units of affordable senior housing.

The project site is a 12.6 acre lot bounded by East Gun Hill Road to the southwest and Edson Avenue to the northeast and south.

The City acquired the site in the 1980s to expand the adjacent New York City Transit Authority Gun Hill Bus Depot, which never occurred.

The site used to be the location of a private recreational center with a golf-driving range, miniature golf course, batting cage, parking lot and a restaurant. The buildings left from these businesses are abandoned and unused.

In 2012, the MTA and the City sent out a request for proposals to dispose of the property and build a pedestrian-oriented retail destination.

The effort was spearheaded by the Economic Development Corporation. The affordable senior housing was added as a requirement later in the process.

In 2013, Gun Hill Square LLC was chosen to develop the site......

Bronx LGBT center to close, ex-boss allegedly stole funds

The LGBT community center in the Bronx, N.Y., is closing because the former director allegedly embezzled $338,000.

The 16-year-old Bronx Community Pride Center, 929 Kelly St., Bronx, N.Y., will close as early as June 30 due to “economic difficulties, past debt and inability to raise” funds.

“The organization has debts which exceed revenues at this time, and without significant cash infusions from major donors they are unable to continue operations financially,” the center said in a news release.

The New York Post reported that the decision affects more than 1,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people who use the center.

The newspaper carried an exclusive that former center executive director Lisa Winters was arrested June 15 and faces charges that she embezzled money from the institution until she was fired in January 2010.

Winters, according to the Post report, is alleged to have improperly used the center’s credit cards, debit cards and checks to take $338,000 for her personal expenses and those of a friend. That’s about the same amount of the center’s debt.

Winters, 47, allegedly used more than $15,000 from the center’s accounts to pay a dog walker, more than $11,000 for her clothing, $12,000 for restaurant dining and $9,604 for pet-store purchases. The Post cited a criminal complaint and a New York City Department of Investigation probe.

Winters, a former appointee to a mayoral commission, also allegedly stole $25,000 for her and her wife – they married last year and live in Manhattan – to take a trip to Africa in 2007.

The Bronx District Attorney’s Office is handling the prosecution, which involves charges of larceny and falsifying business records.

The center’s slogan is “committed to empowering members of our community.” It has offered advocacy and counseling services to adults and youths, along with HIV/AIDS education and prevention, Pride planning and cultural activities.

The center’s website says it began in 1995 when “a group of seasoned Bronx LGBT activists, community leaders, residents and health care practitioners mobilized to address the lack of sensitive and informed medical and social services available to the Bronx LGBT community.”
