Less than a month into the season, Kaprielian learned he would have to undergo Tommy John surgery and then the right-hander was sent to the A's in July as part of the deal that brought Sonny Gray to The Bronx. Kaprielian's departure left Chance Adams, Dillon Tate and Justus Sheffield as some of the best arms the Yankees have - and while there doesn't appear to be any room for them at the major league level, all three will be watched closely, since the Yankees will undoubtedly need more than five starters this season.

De Blasio keeps promise: No jail for Staten Island as he outlines plan to shut Rikers

Following through on his promise, Mayor Bill de Blasio said unequivocally Wednesday that Staten Island will not be getting a new jail as part of his plan to close Rikers Island as fast as possible. Instead, he and City Council Speaker Corey Johnson announced plans to open four "smaller, safer and fairer" borough-based jails in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx that would provide space for 5,000 detainees.

NYC looks to build new Bronx prison as part of Rikers shutdown

Just hours after the Commission of Correction put out a report that said the state might intervene in the shutdown of Rikers if the city doesn't improve the situation at the island prison, the city is now offering more concrete steps about the planned shutdown. In addition to expanding or renovating three existing facilities in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, respectively, the de Blasio administration has now confirmed that it is planning to build a fourth prison at 320 Concord Avenue, in the Bronx.

Mayor announces plan to phase out Rikers Island jail

Mayor de Blasio on Wednesday announced an agreement with the City Council to open or expand jails in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx as part of a plan to phase out the troubled island-based jail in the East River. Under the deal announced with Council Speaker Corey Johnson, a new jail would be sited at 320 Concord Ave .

City selects Bronx location to build new jail

After increased pressure from inmate advocates and Gov. Cuomo, the de Blasio administration Wednesday announced a plan to build a new jail in the Bronx and renovate three existing facilities off of Rikers Island. The NYPD Tow Pound in Mott Haven will be home to a new facility as part of the city's plan to create smaller and safer jails.
